Minnesota Auto Insurance

Minnesota requires all licensed vehicles to have auto insurance.

The types and amounts of car insurance required in Minnesota are as follows:

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) -split limit - 20000 for medical expenses / 20000 for lost wages/replacement services 40000 total limit
Bodily Injury Insurance (BIL) - split limit - 30000 per person / 60000 per accident
Physical Damage Insurance (PDI) - 10000
Uninsured Motorist Insurance (UMI) - split limit - 25000 per person / 50000 per accident

If you have borrowed money to buy your car you will be required you to carry comprehensive and collision coverage. If you do not buy this coverage on your own, the lender may buy it and charge you for the premium. This is called  “forced insurance;” it is extremely expensive and legal.

The State of Minnesota Department of  Driver and Vehicle Services and the Department of Commerce Insurance Gateway both encourage you to get comparison quotes when making a car insurance purchase.
