The owner and operator of motor vehicles in the state of Iowa must both be able to prove financial responsibility. The may be accomplished one of two ways.

  1. By posting security with the State of Iowa for the amount of $55,000 by certified check, cashiers check, money order or a surety bond. The posting must be maintained for a minimum of two years.
  2. By maintaining liability insurance with the following minimum coverage:

Bodily Injury Insurance - split limit - 20000 per injured person  limit / 40000 per accident limit
Property Damage Insurance - 15000 per accident

Financial responsibility after an accident and future proof of rules apply to non-residents as well. Non-residents cannot operate or register any vehicle in Iowa until all requirements
