No-fault automobile insurance is mandatory in Michigan.

 Every car owner must buy certain basic coverage in order to register a vehicle in Michigan.. The basic no-fault policy has three parts:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
    Lost wages - 2008 allowed amount is $4713.00 per month
    Death Benefit - Monthly amount for three years
    Replacement services $20 per day for 3 years

  • Property Protection Insurance (PPI) 
    $1,000,000 limit

  • Residual Liability Insurance 
    Bodily Injury (BI) -split limit  20000 per person / 40000 per accident
    Property Damage (PD)-limit-10000

The no-fault law protects insured persons from being sued as the result of an auto accident except in certain situations:
• If you cause an accident in Michigan in which someone is killed or seriously injured.
• If you are involved in an accident in Michigan with a non-resident who is an occupant of a motor vehicle not registered in Michigan.
• If you are involved in an accident in a state other than Michigan.
