Virginia Auto Insurance

Virginia's auto insurance law requires your vehicle must be insured when you register it.

Virginia law requires the following minimum insurance coverage for all registered vehicles.

Bodily Injury Insurance - split limit - 25000 per injured person  limit / 50000 per accident limit
Property Damage Insurance - 25000 per accident

If for some reason you are unable to purchase car insurance you may pay a $500 uninsured motor vehicle fee (UMV). The Virginia Uninsured Motor Vehicle (UMV) fee permits a motor vehicle owner to register an uninsured motor vehicle. Payment of the $500 fee does not provide in anyway auto  insurance coverage and if involved in an car accident, the uninsured motorist remains personally liable for all damages. This may result in loss of assets as well as future wages.

Self-insurance or Surety Bonds are also options for owners of business vehicles. Details are available at any DMV office.

The State of Virginia Department of  Motor Vehicles and the Bureau of  Insurance both encourage you to get comparison quotes when making a car insurance purchase.
